Video: Socrates for Six-Year Olds

In 1974 Professor Mathew Lipman of Montclair State University developed the first systematic progamme designed to bring philosphy to schoolchildren around the world. Inspired by the work of Pragmatist philosophers C.S Pierce and John Dewey on communities of inquiry, Lipman’s Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children translated the same principles to philosophical discussion in schools, creating the stimulus and discussion method that underlies many P4C approaches today.

In 1990, the BBC produced a documentary on Lipman’s work, which provides a fascinating insight into the history of P4C, and is available to watch on YouTube (split in to seven parts)  here.
